i am so broke after going on vacation. this is OK, though, because it forces me to come up with interesting and free things to do/eat all day. since my job also forgot to put me on the schedule this week, i have a lot of free time on my hands. some interesting things i came up with:

1. get a spray bottle from the travel section of Target for about $.89. fill it with mineral water. lie on your bed with a fan blowing air over you wearing underwear only and spritz yourself with the water. you'll feel quite cool even if the air conditioning in your apartment is almost always broken.

2. running is quite free and has many benefits, not the least of which is losing all the pizza/booze fat you gained while on vacation. just grab your ipod, throw on some boys' basketball shorts (i hate girls running shorts, they are so slutty and uncomfortable) and run around! if you live in a bad neighborhood like me, run as far as possible from your home for safety reasons. i tie my housekey up in my sneakers so i don't have to carry it.

3. make an amigurumi octopus for your sister. or just about anything is really easy to make if you have a lot of free time. i also happen to have a lot of extra yarn sitting around as i am an avid knitter.

4. make a really cheap Frappuccino-type beverage. i took the rest of my morning coffee (i can never drink 6 cups, wtf) and froze it in an ice cube tray. then i put it in the blender with some soy milk, cocoa powder, and half a teaspoon of agave nectar (way better than sugar). mmm. i also used a pineapple straw to feel more festive.

5. reorganize your closet and/or school supply area. i have many, many types of glues and adhesives. it's nice to reorganize them and take stock once in a while.

6. cook vegan food from vegweb.com. they have the best recipes. my favorites include best mac n cheese in the entire world...seriously and yummy lentils and spinach. vegan food is often cheap and i have a lot of ingredients on hand anyway.

7. watch stuff on Hulu- it's free!

vegan challenge: day 13?

it appears that i have vanquished all twelve days of my vegan challenge. the first few days were pretty awful with lots of shaking, jitters, sluggish brain, etc. i have gradually adapted, however, and i'm feeling lots better than before. my migraine count is way down and i don't feel as tired in my afternoon classes (i am usually tempted to fall asleep). a strange downside, however, is that i feel really drained when i go out in the sunshine for any period of time at all. it's very strange.

now i'm getting ready to catch up on laundry, dishes, and make some large batches of chocolate chip energy bars and mac & "cheese" for the upcoming 10 days AKA the most hellish part of the academic year. last year i stayed awake for over 67 hours straight in order to finish my final project. i feel a little bit better this quarter, but there are still going to be plenty of late nights and over consumption of coffee.

now, however, i am off to eat sandwiches with my lovely boyfriend. enjoy your long weekend!

vegan challenge: one week vanquished!

so i've been a bit lax about writing because i worked crazy hours thurs, fri, and saturday! after all the madness of school and work, i was totally ready to kick back last night with some beer and hot dogs. what? how can this be?

introducing Dirt Frank's Hot Dog Palace, one of my favorite places to eat in Columbus! all of their amazing, creative, delicious hot dogs can be substituted for a veggie dog, and most of their toppings have a vegan equivalent. i was on cloud nine, eating the delicious Ohioana dog with crispy, crunch tater tots and a bunch of delicious beers. and then some more beers. and then we took the party down the street to the St. James and i had even more beers.

which is why i had a late start this morning trying to get my stuff together to go to Hell City. my best morning-after-drinking cure is peanut butter toast, lots of water, and something spicy. Frank's Red Hot cures almost any upset hangover tummy for me. after i'd finished my spicy hashbrowns and PB toast, i felt ready to head out the door. Hell City, a tattoo convention, was pretty interesting, but i'm not sure it was worth the $20 door charge. i have been meaning to get my tattoo touched up for a long time (it's crazy faded) but i didn't see any artists there that really seemed to do the style i'm looking for. oh well. we walked the entire way home (wow!) and i am finally getting together this recipe and heading out to studio to do homework.

i hope everyone had as fantastic a weekend as i did, and congratulations to ME for staying vegan one entire week :)

vegan challenge: day 3

another day is done! i can't believe how quickly the end of the quarter flies by when you have eight million things to do. tomorrow i can look forward to a test on my entire lighting design textbook. nah, no big.

here's what i ate:

breakfast: oatmeal (did i mention that i LOVE oatmeal?) sweetened with applesauce, sliced strawberries, a banana, coffee

lunch: salad with cranberries and sunflower seeds, chickpea salad sandwich, 1/4 cup raw almonds

snack: diet coke, celery with peanut butter

dinner: potato/broccoli stuffed peppers with red curry sauce, oatmeal/corn/apple muffin, sparkling water

wow was that recipe complicated and time-consuming! i spent probably 1.5 hrs rocking the 6+ steps in the recipe. i felt very accomplished at the end, though, and lots of leftovers.

wish me luck on this damn test!

vegan challenge: day 2

i knew today would be the most difficult because i had to work tonight. i work at a casual dining restaurant that has close to nothing on the menu that doesn't contain some sort of animal product. i tried to eat earlier in the day in order to avoid the nasty food at work. i also have an addiction to diet soda which is plentiful and readily available at work. i skipped coffee today, though, and drank a ton of water, so i didn't feel bad having one diet soda. and the funny thing was, i didn't even want to finish it!

what i ate:

breakfast: oatmeal with strawberries and applesauce

lunch: chickpea salad sandwich, sugar snap peas (raw), baked potato with vegan margarine and some frank's red hot

snack: celery with peanut butter

dinner: refried bean "quesadilla" (two whole-wheat tortillas stuck together with pintos and some jalapenos with salsa on the side), a few almonds, side salad at work without crutons or cheese, french dressing

i think i'm doing well but it's challenging to think ahead and pack foods to take with me when i'm busy with school all day. i also had a cup of peppermint tea tonight to settle an unruly stomach.

so i have gotten through today (well, it's almost over) successfully. i had a little shaky period around 4pm- i'm not sure if it was not eating enough food, the right food, or withdrawal from the Diet Soda i usually consume 5 of per day. i had some 100% grapefruit juice and carried on.

here's what i ate:

breakfast: kashi blueberry heart love stuff with sliced strawberries, soymilk, an Odwalla Superfruit drink

lunch: chickpea salad sandwich, celery, an orange, coffee (black)

snack: grapefruit juice, slice of sourdough bread i bought at the c-ville farmer's market

dinner: whole grain/wheat penne with homemade tomato sauce, salad w/cranberries and sunflower seeds

other than the rogue cup of coffee, i'm trying to wean myself off of the caffeine addiction. it's unbelievable how much soda i drink while i'm at work. i guess because it's just right there and free and easy to keep refilling, i drink it, but it's disgusting to read of what diet soda is made of and how it's just as/possibly more terrible than the sugar stuff.

hopefully tomorrow goes as well as today. i'm off to make my bean salad for tomorrow's dinner.

12 day vegan challenge

today is the first day of my 12 day vegan challenge. the idea? starting today, and for the next twelve, i'm eating vegan with the added challenge of no oil, sugar, or non-whole grains! wow! I am using the McDougall Program as a basis for this challenge, which you can read more about here. i'm totally excited to get more energy, clearer skin, a healthier immune system, and all of the things promised by diet-makers. actually, i have no unrealistic expectations of this, i just want to see what happens.

i started off today with a bowl of Kashi with strawberries (locally grown!) and soy milk. i never actually read the Kashi box to make sure its vegan... oops. bad start! the rest of the day will obviously be much better.

it is 3:27 am and i am still working on this godforsaken model. i have taken it apart and reglued it together at least four times. i have cut pieces out, remade pieces, covered it with tracing paper and ripped it all off, only to cover it again. i built a fake curving cliff landscape out of foamcore for it to protrude out of. i'm still not done, but i will finish it tomorrow. then, next week, i get to build it all over again, only better.

I haven't updated in quite a bit. I will get good pictures (and stories) for an NYC post soon. I can't say that the quarter has been "crazy busy," but I can say that at times so far it has been both crazy and busy. I love my studio class and I will put up some diagrams.

BUT down to business. I love Georgia. It looks great on the screen and it's one of the only serif fonts that I can stand to look at. Sometimes people (ahem) make fun of me for overusage, but I have a limited knowledge of typography, so I say stick to what works!

NYC!

i'm back from my design trip to NYC april 2-6. what an awesome time! i seriously did not want to go home on sunday, even after four days of driving, running, visiting, subway riding, drinking, eating, dancing, and schmoozing. note that "sleeping" is not included in that list, because we all did very little of it.

we drove to New Jersey on thursday and took the PATH train into the city. our hostel was... quaint, is probably a good way to describe it. 8 people to a room, two single showers per floor. it was nice enough, though, and we ended up spending very little time there anyway.

we visited NBBJ Architecture and Calori Vanden-Eynden firms on Friday. Chris and Dave from CV were absolutely wonderful hosts and made us all feel very welcome at their studio. in addition to learning a LOT about their company and design in general, we also had a beer. so fun!

Saturday was museum day. my friends and i went to the Met, MoMA, The Guggenheim (well, we stood in the lobby. it was really expensive) and Hewlett Cooper. and we went to Chinatown for bargain hunting and Little Italy for food. Kelly and i checked out the Jonathan Adler store only a few blocks from the Met. it was amazing! i loved their customizable wallpaper and their manifesto on the front wall which in one part says "we believe colors can't clash" HELL YES!

our last day in the city we had an amazing brunch at a Spanish restaurant, a walk through Central Park, design museum, and finally a longggg drive home. i'm sure we did about a hundred more things than that, but it would take a long time to write them all down. in short, i love NYC and had a super amazing time there!

so it's finals week and things are winding down with a bam.

i'm working on my FCD and, of course, finishing my bumble bee. i have been extremely unmotivated and am finding it hard to concentrate on the things i need to do. the problem? i think i really want a shamrock shake! i have no idea if they have them at the McD's on campus or not; i no longer own a car and neither choice of walking in the dark to 18th or trying to transport a shake on my bicycle seem appealing. but mmm, the minty goodness of the legendary Shamrock Shake!

i haven't eaten McDonalds in 2009, something i am kind of proud of, but i'd be willing to make an exception for that fine chunk of high fructose corn syrup, lactose, and artificial mint flavoring. i can already feel the stomachache (i'm lactose intolerant) but i don't even care if it means shamrocky-goodness.

so i don't know how many people know this, but i love riding my bicycle! my current ride is a '78 Schwinn Le Tour III that i bought from some dude over the summer. previously i had a very old, rusted out Schwinn Varsity that weighed about a million pounds and that someone (cough) wrecked while i was gone. i also have a cruiser with big fat whitewall tires, but i keep that at my mom's house. anyway, here's what my bike looks like:

it's the blue one. and i am excited to say that i will be riding my bike from June 20-28 on a trip through Ohio on GOBA, or Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure. this is the route map:

i plan on going with my roommate Logan and my former roommate Kendyl. it's going to be so much fun and i'm excited!

we are designing toys for 252. i'm currently debating a bumble bee / lady bug transformers kind of toy. or an anteater with a magnetic ant-eating tongue. i don't know.

i had a fun conversation with Chris Clemmer of Sprig Toys on Monday. Sprig is an eco-toy company based in Fort Collins, Colorado. their toys are made of a mixture of reclaimed wood particles and recycled plastic, called Sprigwood. they don't have any batteries, and they are really, really cute. check it out:

they even light up and make sounds!

i am really excited to make some cool toys, and i might even bring my young sister in for testing day. she likes toys, i like toys, sounds good to me!

i have started working on my final course document. i was thinking about incorporating this chandelier/lamp theme, but Lo said it is very Urban Outfitters. it's very possible. if anyone has any thoughts about this, please let me know in the comments.

also, i had a cupcake from Gingham Bakery yesterday... it was SO GOOD. go check them out on Thurman Avenue in German Village! they have so many kinds of cupcakes and their store is very, very cute. like pink walls cute. and i know we all love supporting local businesses :)

phew! is it bad that i actually looked FORWARD to studying for an exam yesterday? it just seems so, i don't know, easy... after all of the projects i've been doing.

you know you've been awake too long when you start second-guessing your spelling on really, really simple words. i'm working on a logo for something --i can't say what just yet-- and i had typed "series" on Illustrator to get a feel for the typeface portion of the logo. "is that really how you spell 'series'?" i wondered to myself. "wow, that looks weird. series. s-e-r-i-e-s. what a strange word."

yes, that IS how you spell it, and no, i'm not that happy to be awake at 3:30am. unfortunately, a bizarre cross of design 252 and design 254 projects, a design 254 exam, and double projects for my internship happened to make a rare blue-moon appearance tonight. some things to look forward to in near future (like tomorrow, if i can stay awake) time: photos of my tessellation project, photos of my bizarre irregular surface project, logo sketches, photo boards, and research panels from our group presentation!

we all love Helvetica, whether we know it or not, and Gary Hustwit helped us to see that in his fabulous 2007 film. word on the street, however, tells me that his new project could be even cooler: a documentary about products and the every day consumer! i read about Objectified last week in Readymade and i had to find out more. i am intrigued.

here's what the website has to say about the film:

as excited as i am to see this, the more excited to see what Gary Hustwit will come out with next. he's covered Visual Communication with a documentary on a typeface, and he's got Industrial Design now with Objectified. will his next film be about Interior Spaces? can he resist touching all three corners of the design trifecta and NOT make a film about badass Interior Space Design? only time will tell, i suppose, but in the mean time i am going to implore Gary to crack open a copy of Wallpaper* and start filming... and find the next local screening of Objectified, of course.

my thought of the day is this: what is up with Twitter? i'm afraid i just don't understand it, what it does, or why one would be interested in it.

i admit, i was Barack Obama's Twitter friend for about a week over the summer. the result? messages every time he made a speech, visited a college campus, or set foot on a bus. i respect the man, but knowing his every move just doesn't rev my engine. also, my phone kept beeping at work, blowing my cover and earning the ire of my bosses.

so Twitters, tell me this: why tweet? i promise i will take your responses seriously and with real considerations. i'm not opposed to this phenomenon, but merely inquisitive.

this is the end of our first project in 252. it has literally and figuratively beat me up and run me through the ringer. i won't give a point-by-point recount of the injuries, lack of sleep, and general craziness inflicted by this project. have you ever tried to solder something while brushing your teeth? have you ever had to choose between eating and finishing a project? have you ever been to Kinkos at 2:30 in the morning? i have now done all these things.

behold my result: 4 pages of process boards plus two images of the final products. we also had to do an Illustrator rendering and one in pencil. you can click on any of the pages or pictures to see them bigger. i can't believe it's all done!

so yesterday was a SNOW DAY at OSU! how BA is that? i had a great time sleeping in (until 10:30, woo hoo) and working on my mask all freakin' day. i also went to see Benjamin Button with my boyfriend. it was pretty good, not fabulous, but i did get to drink a beer at the movie theater. weird but pleasing experience.

i've been totally terrible about updating my little blog, but i promise to be better. our current school project is wire/bristol/digital masks. my current personal project is organizing my portfolio. i had an interview for an internship at Bliss Events a few days ago and got to present my portfolio there. it was great practice and i absolutely love everything they do over there.

so i dropped my computer off at the Apple store yesterday and i have been distraught ever since! that computer is literally the most expensive thing i have ever bought or owned! it is worth three times more than my car. so, i felt pretty reluctant as i handed it over to Susan, the lovely Apple store concierge. sigh. i'll be out of town for most of next week, so i suppose i won't need it anyway, but it's hard to be computerless. also, Logan doesn't have Hot Corners and his screen is too huge. oh but how i love his mighty mouse! you can scroll vertically AND horizontally!!

i'll be out of the 'Bus next week as i'll be in the Windy City and then a wedding in Michigan. be good and have a good break, everyone!

WELLLLLL i am finally done with FINALS! that makes me very happy because i was very stressed about school. i have a whole (well actually, 3/4) month to do fun things such as make crafts, organize, and go to Chi-town!

i made this fun vector last night, which has to do with my resolution to learn Illustrator and InDesign over break. i also want to drink a lot of fine beers and get my christmas shopping/making done in less than $100. think i can do it? i do!

which brings me to my final point: if you need someone to stitch your rags, babysit your kids, or type your thesis paper, call me! i am pretty broke and other than selling a ton of my shit on ebay, i'm willing to trade my many skills for cash. i have a sewing machine and am a very decent seamstress, so if your pants are too big or your coat needs some buttons reattached, call me instead of pitching it! i can also make new projects for you if you'd like. i am great at babysitting and i type 80 wpm. give me a ring and have a safe holiday.

so i have been a very busy girl doing school work. i stayed till 3:30am at Hopkins the other night to finish my 3D squares project. i debated sleeping on one of the drafting tables, but in the end, i figured it would be more awkward to encounter the first person to come in for class the next morning. i promise to have more exciting work to post soon, but unfortunately my main sources of excitement lately have been final projects and bums walking out on their tabs at work!

so i don't have illustrations as promised... mostly because i don't have a scanner (and neither does Logan) and i haven't made it to the library. maybe tomorrow. but what i DO have are Atmosphere pictures from 10/22 and some crappy video from the Features show! why does my Env2 take video sideways, can anybody tell me?

i drew this guy during my first class. he's kind of based on the Orthodox priest in Battleship Potemkin. i live traced and colored him in my design history class. tuesdays and thursdays are awfully boring

what a cold, snowy, wet, day! it is officially winter here in Columbus, and while i really enjoy snowy days and sledding and cocoa, i can't say that i'm stoked about trudging around in this shit to work and school.

that being said, i spent the majority of today indoors mastering the Live Trace tool in Illustrator. WOW. i feel like i just read the bible for the first time or something. i have to jet to work (GO BROWNS!) but here is a tiny snippet of a project i am converting to digital:

here is my completed Klingon project. basically, we created a completely new typeface from an old one, hence the name. i think it turned out pretty well, and i got lots of Illustrator experience. someday soon i will learn it!

there are a few little errors, but i fixed them after printing it. sweet! we saw the Features last night... AWESOME. i might post some pics and video later. we got to meet them and got their autographs as well. good times.

so, we've been doing some stuff in Illustrator for my studio class. i do NOT know how to use illustrator, for realzies. i can't believe that i managed to put together my entrance exam in that program!

here are some examples of the typeface research pages i've been doing. more pictures soon of some sketchbook drawings (including me as Dr. Girlfriend from Venture Bros) and the fabulous Klingon project! also, don't forget my birthday next week :) i love art supplies, cash, and fancy beer/wine.
